A new study shows that heartburners and acid reflux can be cured with just one pill.
A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that just one pill can cure heartburners, with the number of side effects dropping to just 14.
The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Gastroenterology, looked at 823 participants who had taken acid reflux medications before and after a heartburner. The researchers found that only one pill had a statistically significant effect on heartburners, with the reduction from the control group, and only the effect on the other group, was statistically significant. The researchers also discovered that there were no statistical differences between the two groups on any of the symptom variables, and that the heartburners in the control group had the greatest reduction in symptom scores.
“In this study, the heartburners were more often treated with heartburners, and the improvement was better than placebo for symptom control,” said lead author Dr. Amy E. Monell, M. D., Professor of Gastroenterology and Head of Gastroenterology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
Heartburners are among the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States, affecting up to 6.8 million people annually. According to the American Heart Association, a heartburner, or heartburn medication, is the most commonly prescribed medication for GERD in the United States, followed by acid reflux medications such as Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid. The American College of Gastroenterology, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Academy of Family Physicians are among the top 20. Heartburn medications include Prilosec (omeprazole) and Nexium (esomeprazole) and acid reflux medications include Zantac (acid reflux medicine) and Pravastatin (menstrual).
“Previous studies have suggested that just one heartburn medication could be an effective way to treat GERD,” said Dr. Monell. “This study provides the first evidence to show that just one pill of acid reflux medication is an effective way to treat heartburners.”
